2008 PARTICIPANT SURVEY RESULTS

CRISIS INTERVENTION & ADVOCACY

Refuge of Nations’ trained staff responds to requests from our community members to intervene in times of crisis. We also serve as advocates for our immigrant and refugee neighbors whose legal rights are violated, referring them to community resources of all kinds.

SUPPORT GROUPS

Isabel O’Shee leads separate support groups for men and women at different points during the year. Group members are helped to explore various difficult areas of their lives, such as the impact of growing up in a dysfunctional family, and to acquire skills to handle their particular challenges.

TRANSPORTATION & CHILDCARE
(FOR COUNSELING SESSIONS)

Refuge of Nations provides transportation when possible for those who need it to attend counseling. We also provide free childcare in the nursery at our office for counseling clients and for support group members.

REFERRALS & ACCULTURATION

Refuge of Nations deliberately cultivates relationships with other community organizations
so that we can provide knowledgeable recommendations to our community members. We also provide interpretation for appointments on a case-to-case basis, occasional translation services, and other acculturation and assimilation assistance when possible.

INTER-CULTURAL BIBLE TEACHING

As part of Refuge of Nations’ weekly Wednesday evening community group meetings, we
provide culturally-sensitive Bible teaching in the spirit of Earl Thames’ question:
“Jesu Lord, what make you come down for me, mix it up with such as we?”

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

Redeemer Evangelical Church, where are our offices are located, provides free English as a Second Language classes on Wednesday evenings in conjunction with our community group meetings. In addition, Redeemer’s ESL teachers are available to work with individuals during the day throughout the week. Please contact Diane Gilbert for more information (314. 481.5511)

INTER-CULTURAL TRAINING FOR VOLUNTEERS & PARTNERS

Refuge of Nations offers orientation, ongoing training and support for all volunteers. We invest our lives and time in mentoring our college and seminary interns to mentor others. In addition, we make frequent presentations on a wide variety of subjects related to the subjects of inter-cultural relations and the Kingdom of Christ.

“Plan C:
Bread & Manna”

It was quite clear that Plan A had failed only 30 minutes after start time. “Mexican Hebrew”

Last Wednesday evening, we explored the story of Senor Perez in our Refuge of Nations’ community group. Our Hispanic friends were amused that a Hebrew man, mentioned in the Book of Ruth, possessed a common Mexican surname. The humor wasn’t lost on the Africans, Iraqis, Americans, and Nepalese present either....
